ARTIST STATEMENT
This indoor soccer field are these high school girls’ sanctuary from the outside world, a place where they feel safe to talk about topics from periods to genocide. Sarah DeLappe, profoundly depicts teenage girlhood with this pack of female warriors. The space should feel like it goes on forever by using reflection, repetition of turf and size. It’s very important to make it feel like the audience is a part of the show by transforming the seating units to feel like bleachers so they can watch these girls go through more than just a soccer game. We are expected to be perfect in life and this show takes you on a journey of recognizing who you are and to portray these young women as more than just dainty and fragile. LED tape runs along the sides of the turf floor to help with the idea of the set going on forever. Each player has customized props tailored to their personality from their backpack types to small pins on their bags.
